Suncoast home destroyed by fire – FOX4
**Updated 7/17** Engines 1, 2, 15, Truck 2, Rescue 2, Support 1, BC 2 and BC 4 responded to a house fire on Surfside Court just after 6pm Tuesday. The first unit on the scene found fire in the garage and heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the roof. Most of the fire appears to have been in the garage and in the attic which caused extensive damage.
The Red Cross is assisting the resident and his two pet birds.
**Battalion Chief Soosh interviewed the owner of the home who believes his house was struck by lightning about 5pm because he heard a loud clap of thunder, lost power in a back bedroom and found one of his breakers tripped. He reset the breaker and about an hour later smelled smoke and found his garage on fire. The owner called 911 grabbed his birds and moved his car from the garage.
The investigation around the home did not reveal any apparent signs of a lightning strike but did reveal heavy charring and a fire pattern proceeding up the side garage wall from an outlet. The State Fire Marshal was called and agreed with BC Soosh that the fire was apparently an accidental electric fire.
